Feeling of Small but Definite Happiness from Looking at Cardinals in the Central Park

                                                                                                      Dong Hyun Ryu (Art Journalist)

“I think that a full stack of folded and rolled clean pants in the drawer might be one of small but definite happiness, but this might only be my unique way of thinking…(omitted)… the feeling I get when I take out a new white inner shirt that smells like cotton and start to button from the top is also one of my small but definite happiness.” (from <Small but Definite Happiness> of <<Afternoon in the Islet of Langerhans>>in the collection of essays by Murakami Haruki)
“Small but definite happiness,” is a saying that was first introduced by Murakami Haruki in his collection of essays. He describes it as eating baked bread by tearing it, fully stacked underwear in the drawer, or wearing inner shirts that smell like cotton; all refer to the joyful everyday happiness that can be felt in trivial things.

In Dukki Kim’s paintings, a landscape of this “small but definite happiness” is depicted.  With topics such as happiness in the everyday life with family and joy of travelling with family, clear and warm colors are expressed through pointillism and roadbeds of decoration elements fill the canvas. I first met Dukki in a cold winter going into the spring of 2001. At that time, the style of the artist was different from the painting style currently being shown. He demonstrated a simplistic format including dark black simple roadbeds using ink (muk) against a yellow background. However, there is one thing that has not changed.  It is the sense of happiness that emerges from the paintings. While the works of bright and clear colors changed from 2008, this topic has not changed.

In the <Dukki Kim – Scenery with Cardinals> exhibition held in memory of the 12th anniversary of the opening of Soul Art Space, 20 various works containing this topic are shown.  This includes the “Family Series” and “Travel Series,” along with the existing works that depict everyday happiness with family as well as works from travelling to Italy with his family a few years ago.  Additionally, new works are a reconstruction of landscapes in New York, which Dukki travelled last spring.

The title of the exhibition, <New York – Scenery with Cardinals> demonstrates the landscape the artist saw from a café when he visited the Central Park in New York. Two cardinals are sitting on a bright tree and there’s a flower tree in a park between an old restaurant with red bricks and the riverbank of New York. The depressing landscape of New York, referred to as “Gotham City,” in the movie <Batman>, is transformed into a beautiful city where cheerfulness and comfort co-exist through Dukki’s paintings.

<New York – Bryant Park> marks a turning point in Dukki’s artworks as he presents a different style from his existing works.  The magnanimous brush strokes of existing delicate pointillism and clear colors are mixed, thus demonstrating abundant dimensions and liveliness.  Through the style of mixing pointillism of distant view and brush strokes of near view, this is one-step further from the <Firenze – Summer in the Arno> of 2015.  In contrast to the work of <Firenze>, the grass field of pointillism is carried out by the brush strokes of clear and cool colors, and the canvas filled with buildings and trees make the viewers believe that they themselves are looking at this landscape at the Bryant Park in New York. Seeing all kinds of people sitting by the tables next to the park makes the viewers also think about resting, travelling and happiness.

The <Spring in New York>, which shows couples, dogs and cats, trees, flowers as decorations against a purple background and <New York – Friends>, in which two dogs rest in the park, are works that show colors and brush strokes different from the past. Here, <Manhattan, New York – Scenery with Brooklyn Bridge> is a New York version of ‘line drawing series.’  What seems to be drawn by oil-based crayons and watercolor paints used in childhood is transformed into a world of beautiful and small dreams through the use of white lines, psychedelic blue background and pastel colors filled in between the screens.  <A Waltz of Spring - Spring in Dangu-ri> shows a unique approach among the artworks exhibited.  The canvas filled with yellow brush strokes is spontaneous and strong, which is different from the delicate composition of the canvas that was shown so far.  There were hints of strokes in Asian paintings that he studied.  Additionally, the works about family and travelling to Italy add to the abundance of the exhibition.

Through the works of this exhibition, it can be witnessed that there are lots of variations from the works focused on pointillism, which were introduced from 2008.  The recent works add vitality and depth to the canvas by mixing pointillism and raw brush strokes mixed with watercolors.  If the existing “Family Series” expressed happiness with various sizes of pointillism, the recent “Travel Series” express the realistic world encountered through travelling using magnanimous brush stroke techniques.

In the past, I referred the works of the artist as “Chang Ucchin of Korean paintings.”  This is because they were connected to the ‘Neorealism School,’ which shows the works of Chang Ucchin. Rather than replaying the objects as they are like the “Neorealism School,” which pursued the original and mental essence internalized in objects, Dukki Kim demonstrates the small everyday happiness he experiences from his family and reveals his own perception through varied landscapes of travel destinations containing happiness and joy.

As such, paintings of Dukki Kim are filled with ‘small but definite happiness’ of everyday life and travelling.  And there is one more.  It is that the paintings of Dukki Kim also make the viewers who see them in the exhibition hall feel the ‘small but definite happiness.’  On a day in late fall going into cold winter, I also felt the ‘small but definite happiness’ in the artist’s painting placed in the atelier. Perhaps, his paintings have more of a ‘big and definite virtue’.
