Why don't we take a short Rest ?
 Cho Eun-chung, curator

Our accustomed daily life, take a short break.

Our contemporaries are striving hard to live better aiming at advanced high technology. The criterion of going in advance is the speed. As the coming into wide use of KTX, the number of train stop has been decreased. A great speed makes to lose our visual comfort by not much paying attention to the scenic view. Windows of the buildings are getting less and less, even if it is wide, it adopts tightly sealed system that shuts to the air. Such environment leads life of the ordinary people monotonous. People are also strives to pace the current of the times and get accustomed to it. If we go unfamiliar place we would take a good look to remember the route. When we quite experienced in such things, getting fast from the first slowness, we would be indifferent to the surroundings. In this way, we might have forgotten the recess for the reason of the routine way of living.

On TV program, , there has ever been introduced every day life of up-country girl. Except the 20 minutes for studying, everything in her schedule, that she has made it specially before the vacation, is watching TV and play time. The TV producer asked to her, "Why do you have study hours only for 20 minutes?" There is no wonder, when she answered, "It's enough." Nothing is more important than having fun, it is naturally enough for her 20 minutes studying unlike other kids. Shall we make own schedule like this girl, students on vacation? What is the most precious part of the day? ... Don't we have even treated the authorized hours of sleep as a rest for the life of tomorrow? Tied to the timetable can be the only way of the rest? Everyone needs recess. Our contemporaries are, however, troubled with silent pressure when they take a rest for they might have left behind. Recess is the essential part of life. The Turning of the season also needs a pause. It gives some amount of time to get accustomed the change. We, therefore, need to look back on our way, making a halt right here, not spent our whole life in pursuit of going advance.

A Whistle Stop refers to take a rest from the everyday life. In small station, there is no crew, it just stop in moving direction. It does not force every passing train to stop. Some might pass through, some might stop. In modern society, high speed being the most competitive power, you may think that kind of place is against all the spirit of the time. The place and time of quick stop allows the passengers to look around surroundings and to rest.

A Whistle Stop is the rest place for a while. It is not here and there, but exists together at the same time and place. This is the place of coming contact with the past and the present, the present and the future, going against the time and staying with the present. In this exhibition, a Small Station has the meaning of putting together the physical space- park, rest area, home, coach - and the emotional space- family, dream, rest, derivation of the reality through the imagination. A small station, there is no control of something, no one governed by it. Likewise the moving train, let's have a small stop with the help of the will from which we are free others in this show.

A comma gives a short pause in sentence. There is the moment of 'some pause' in our life. It is the time when we have a spare time, a moment of the dreaming, unconsciously take a look something. Let's have a look at our life in this visualized space through the captured images.

This exhibition intends to careful look into the deliberated pieces of everyday life, which we do not live in it, or rather it regulates us, search for the place and the time of 'recess' like comma in sentence, because we are not the moving existence. What is the time and place of taking a rest in daily life? Usual way of the recess might be taking a walk, having a tea time, relaxing the legs sitting on a bench. To say nothing of general concept of work, there, however, are some artworks that make the viewers to reconsider the recess through the moment of the most uncomfortable. We can have a time to think to ourselves and get some relaxing space where people are available for the exhausted body and the hectic mind in the appreciation for the illuminated. The artists shows the recess presenting sentimental and physical space such as generally perceived sentimental space in everyday, private space and social relaxing place as though people checks the holidays in calender dreaming of the recess, and gives recess from the mind by unconscious scrawl of everyday life. How about looking back 'the routine day' and finding a place for 'Recess' through 6 artists who illuminates every day affairs? Like a famous copy, "It is O.K to turn off your cell phone", let's escape from the routine, recover your composure by contemplating of other's daily happening!

Voyeuristic Way of Seeing - Try to look into ourselves through the others

It is probably an advertisement to show exactly what the modern society is. Let's consider the chocolate pie advertisement whose main concept is the korean affection. This series of advertisement has aroused sympathy of the whole community appealing to humanistic sentiment. The main theme is the everyday affairs. It tells about the everyday happenings: the day of moving, a flagman at the crossing, a postman, a summer lookout shed, on the way to school. There is a tread of connections between films and art in the fact that they deals with the everyday happenings and human story as a subject matter is getting common. As the concern about everyday based on 'we' it become intimately acquainted. Commercial advertisements whose consumers are the mass would like to deal with the everyday life, the homelike and the unartificial, because it has a common ground of 'our experience'.

Artwork deals with everyday life as subjects enables people to have a better communication. It is not unusual to take an interest in daily life. With the social changes - to achieve independence from Spain, Calvinism, Individualism etc. - there had been a concern about the world of "self- oriented" in 17C Netherlands. In Chosun period a genre painting that illuminates life of the ordinary had been popular due to the tendency towards modern society and the development of modern humanism. At this time, there has been various attempts to deal with daily life to share a common with the mass. It has, therefore, been found that we, altogether you and me, have in common in their stories that does not need to add up and take away from reality, because it has based on the real world where we live.

The main focus of this exhibition is everyday life. It is the everyday life that always surrounds us in every aspect like the air, but it can not see clearly. What we see here is the everyday life of the others: everyday life of the artist, the whole neighbourhood and what the artist has observed, felt. To see the others everyday life means try to look into objectively, in other words, voyeuristic view. As John A. Walker said in , "What the eyes have observed is able to translate into the behaviour of the body, where visual image has been constructed and organized using the tool of media and libraries. Experiential observation of the artists may deepen by history and personality of the time, practice, and the understanding of the art history.", Experiential observation and visual construction encourage the viewers to the appreciation and understanding of the integration of experience and knowledge. It is the prompt understanding of seeing the image, not the process of reading letters, figuring a situation and then reviewing the meaning. As we remind our experiences while watching TV dramas and movies, we can also experience the acting of others and substitute feeling through the pictures.

Our daily life develops into the interrelationship that connects me and others. Family is the most intimate group among them. Our mixed feeling about family has both the general and the special. During the course of individualization in modern society it has emerged the family-oriented phenomenon. There is where individualism overlaps with familism in particular, unlike a large family system. Familism can be explained as a homogeneous group that gives a relieved feeling in the process of isolated living in modern society. Kim Dukki visualizes such phenomenon of familism. He records warm hearted family story that is his story; at the same time, ours. His paintings accompany with letters. It does not live together in canvas, but exists in extra elements. It gives, nevertheless, visual promptness and comprehension of the text as well as understanding and sympathy.

His work unfolds several series of and . He presents the journey of life looking at the daily in direct, light and cheerful way. In his work life seems delightful. As if we take a walk along the path we feel placidity in his work. He employs such methodology : at first, make the base colour, put another before it dries, and then the base colour will come out; using a variety of material like pastel, crayon and ink-stick; put these material on traditional korean paper. His methodology implies that where we live now does not stand for just one place, but the overlapped time, the past and the future, that can make the present. His work, illustrates the valuable moment of family on restricted space of canvas. He depicts a gap between the passage of time and the memory through the overlapped figures and by a difference of the darkness and the brightness. His work is a kind of travel sketch which conveys the memoir and culture of family in each season.

Family can be altogether in the house. Whereas house refers the image of outward appearance, home is emphasized the emotional aspect. Doesn't it mean that two concept, external appearance and emotion of the family members, are combined in the social, cultural context? For this reason his series has the powerful meaning of home.

Several houses that are standing against each other are distinguished features in his paintings. His town formed into a house to house assumes a jungle gym, a kind of kids sports facility. People are happy there. Their happiness seems, however, too risky as they might fallen down on the jungle gym that usually gives them so much pleasure.

Flowers are a messenger of love and a medium of memoir in his work. He delivers some flowers to his wife, who is the great pleasure of life and the subject of love. In his joyfulness canvas, be full of "good health laugh, vitality, cheerfulness" there is no discord in everyday life. His work looks like the best example of the family matter. His family story seems the ending of fairy tales, "They lived happily forever."

Hong Insook features the memory of her family through family-self-portrait. Her fragmentary memories and personal stuffs connected with family remind the viewers memoir and association of their family. Filing up with lines and colors on the Korean traditional paper her working process is reminiscent of memories. Layered paper, putting more lines and color into prints, memoirs of family are the same. Marginal space of the canvas produces an echo.

Like her saying, "I wish people were uncomfortable looking at my painting in showing room.", reminding of his or her old times and displaying personal story might be uneasy. As if we read the old times unfolding the photo album, her painting make the viewers to recall her mind.

Flowers are appeared in her painting. The objects which has recognized under the tradition and the experience actually have a system that has the symbolic meaning. Flowers are always a big welcome. But they have a set of rules according to the occasion : carnations on Teachers Day or Parents Day in a token of thanks; chrysanthemum express the sorrow over the death; roses for the love confession, it depends on the situation. Peony and chrysanthemum is the symbol of family memoir.

Her story starts with peony. Wearing a white dress she is weeping secretly with holding her hands. In , she refers home as a memoir of the family. Her story, therefore, ruminates how she lives. She goes back to the past through peony. Her calm weeping represents she endures sorrow in her mind so that it seems more painful. Peony,... old picture frame inlaid of pearl- it was originally not picture frame. The old flapped door from which it comes the furniture of her mother's wedding ceremony encloses weeping her. In this painting, picture frame refers her mother and the time with her.

Started with peony as a guide, she goes back to the childhood days. Father is carrying his little daughter, she is holding a peony. Though peony traditionally means wealth and prosperity, it works as a medium to recall the memoir of the family and connect her to the past. For grand mother it was a thankful flower to support her children; it enable her to feel granny.

我父地 is pronounced in ABuJi, it refers a father. She transcribes it 我父地, an organized word. A alphabet painting describes the meaning of letters borrowed a form of painting, whereas her alphabet painting add meaning to it by loaning some letters. shows relationship of the family. Father, his first child, 'I', who is also the first sister to brothers, has been becoming a living source of life and the earth, which is the origin of life. This is the picture of living family tree which draw a real question about the origin of it.

I live with my father, who gave me life. My father is dependent on 'me', who had a first birthday party held in his arm, because I am all grown up. Daddy and I are riding a rocking horse. He fixes his eyes on the front, where have to go, holding a gripe in his one hand, a stick in another hand. She holds tightly daddy's side leaning against his back, but she supports him with smiling. Her smile does not look bright. The spring parts that hold out the rocking horse seems so unreliable. Does life seem so far away. I am not independent by myself, nor father be alone. Old father and grown up daughter, she does not a little baby any more now, but his companion.

The eldest sister, who rode a horse with daddy before, cries by herself. There is a white mum, a crying woman whose body is drooped with white ribbon on head. Yellow mum that she prayed for father's get well substitutes to white one. White mum and ribbon designate death. For her father has departed at last, she sobbed her heart out at this time. She weeps bitterly. Old depressed feeling sweeps away in her crying. And, again she is sobbing with her head drooped. If you followed the flow of tear, you can find a letter that made of white mum. Tears make white mum, white mums make a letter that signifies tear. Once more, letters remind the meaning. Blowing up the tears in a letter, her sorrow was at anchor. White bird weeping tears of blood signifies her quiet deep sorrow. White mum in candlestick, the white bird that was staying in the letter bites a white mum ,and then it is flying over the candlestick. The white mum made of my tears, it will be ever in my memory.

Park Youngsun set a new time by reorganizing specific events and every routine day of our neighborhood. Her way of seeing is always settled. She steals a look the others's daily life at the fixed location. Her way of seeing is voyeuristic. She looks into the others's life so that it belongs to her. She draws specific objects and surroundings with a contemplating view and sets a behaviour range. More synchronic, repetitive monitor, created by flash animation than fragmented images uncovers our daily life and gives something "unusual" meaning that may be "nothing special".

The artist stares at others life, and we look at the orchestrated others. Her depicted world is full of private stories. The selected, concrete images are adapted to some pieces of short story by her. Reading others's life needs an objective view.

Her way of staring points at the our neighborhood. It is increasingly difficult to see the leaning against wall to wall, the houses with low leveled stone wall. The walls are getting higher and various security system has been established. We have minimized to contact with others in apartment building, though it does not have wall at all, like square box. Even though we are still in the process of modernization, we attempt to take down the walls so as to have a better communication, a public faith. In the course of this attempt her figures depicted neighborhood with simple lines look so striking and friendly.

is the story about her house and the surroundings. In the same place the stories are unfolding as to suitable for the time of year. In view of the looking at others, the artist and we are at the viewpoint of the observer. The artist, however, has two different stand point: he wants to intervening in order to lead the situation; only look at it. Figures on arranged monitor continuously transfer the view point of ours. According to the character's movement the viewers's moving view point can see their daily life. What we see the animated monitor is not like reading letters; it makes impossible to pause a while for reviewing, because the seers become passive as to the characters. It includes spacing monitor, condensing some amount of time, transferring the place and viewpoint, synchronizing plural narratives. Looking at this point, what we see the animated monitor needs a lot of active mental labour. (John A. walker Sahra parker, translated Limsan, Visual Culture, Rubybox, 2004 p.206)

People appeared in do not care about each other. They just pay attention on their business. From time to time there is a stealing glance at the passing girl, most people are working hard in their sector. Objects appeared on this do not care others either. In , people are weeding and the dog is busy on his business. As often we imagine that such things, the dog running after the owner or the butterfly, never happen to there. In this case, butterfly just flaps it's wings, it never flutter flower to flower. Even though the behaviour of characters are lasting, such things-weeding, flapping, dog's walking- are repetitive. is just alike. Digging and moving the dirt, blown away the dead leaves are over and over again.

Soecheon construction site is in the middle of developing a new town. This is the place where so many wild animals were lived in hill at one time. By the way, they might expelled from their grounds. Human beings attempts for better life will be a threaten to other species. We may wonder this is what really we are.
Park Youngsun and Lee Youngbin have in common that they depict daily life in a bird eye view. While Park Youngsun focuses others's daily life on the time of the year in the same place, Lee Youngbin depicts where he lives from various standpoint. Whereas Park Youngsun illuminates the exterior of our neighborhood, Lee Youngbin depicts inner space of the public site.

Absorbed in the inner space means that the spiritual has been his concern, and his work focused on the inner thing starts in blind letters and blinding drawing. He enormously pays attention to his sharp sense of fingertips. On monitor, there is full of the repetition of phrase, "My inner self-portraits". His muttering, which is transferred to the margin space is about uneasiness to the world. Muttering is the state of ecstasy to himself. While busy schedule affects everyday life, this is the recess to which we can pay attention ourselves.

Lee Youngbin depicts the sensibility in public space. This is to look back each day like diary and hold the memory tightly. As time goes by the diary becomes my record, the very moment out of ever long lasting time like photographic image. To record the moment, read it, and seeing or reading may be the halt, in other words, recess.

What he want to represent is the happenings the inside of public space. It can be found that public space in itself various kind of happenings inside of them and including showcase of E mart, inside of public bath and inn. His paintings have a formality of air view, and it shows that he want to be a impartial observer, not be direct intervention. Borrowing the picture dairy form he reveals, however, secretly that it is his routine. Unless we see the picture of it, we do not ascertain what this is his real story. Because there is not found some special story in the writing column. It is barely mentioned about the routine. There is a repetition of "It's raining" and some information about the work. As most phrases in his painting are muttering, you can see the repetition of muttering. Vague murmur is talking to himself or herself, not to inform to others. On the contrary, it is the secret mind that it should be understood by others; it would be the unconscious utterance.

What he depicts is the practical, spiritual exercise that is disguised crowdedness in daily life. There is private room even in public space: public bath for cleaning the physical dirty; Yoga class for the spiritual calm; cheap tourist inn for recovering from the fatigue. People wash the dust away in the naked feel at ease, and shake the dust of their mind. He examines the public bath on which people can strut in naked. He also unfolds the behaviour of naked people in bath where people are more comfortable than full dressed in the street. People only pay attention to themselves here. Washing the dust out would be compared to the training of the mind, as the artist says, "Drawing a picture is the training of the mind, and washing myself off is as same as practice the self-discipline". We do not notice our body until we are participated in the exercise of the mind. It is natural to be nude here. Naked is strange thing in other place; here, wearing a clothes are weird. A matter of course become the weird, strange thing to be natural, the other way round is possible here. Casting away superfluity of the body and the mind, that is the very thing to pay attention to me. Likewise a diary his painting is a record of daily life with the birds-eyed view and makes to retrospect of myself in public space.

Park Younggyun presents a deviation from the custom and private space for salaried man. We can see the desire of breaking rule, departure from the usual through the class of 86 out of 386 generation Mr. Kim, being a assistant deputy manager, who wants to sing loudly in Karaoke and occasionally be a women. Deputy manager Kim is the typical person in our society. He leaves himself as the trend goes by. He has on occasion tried to get out of the routine muttering the dream of the school-day. As it has seen in the copy, "Hard worker! You deserve to leave", he extremely works hard to leave, or dream of future recess without the present rest, the actualization of his idea. Daily life of Kim, however, looks so sad, cynical and unstable, for his dream has been given up and hidden somewhere in his mind. Mr. Kim, who wants once in a while to be a woman wearing a skirt, stuck the flower in his hair, but he actually wear a white dress shirt and tie tightly, tries to take a rest . He cross over the fence very risky balancing himself on legs as if he walk across over the stepping stone. He looks like one of our contemporaries who have stuck in the concrete building and survive critically. Besides, the fence under his feet seems a block of building so that he performs acrobatic between the buildings. In he sings a song with a passion, and a lingerie woman is shown on the screen. In the middle of extreme excitement and fever of drinking bout he reminds the glory(?) of his past. At this scene it shows his amount of gap between the ideal and the reality.

It seems that who wants to free from social bondage, the class of 86, Deputy manager Kim settled in regulated social frame. There is a sound echoed around reading a diary about plump soft sofa. On his monitor the plump, rounded sofa looks so relaxed, comfortable. As a living necessaries of modern times, most houses have sofa, which take up the best place in living room, as if it would be a owner. Our contemporaries like to sit on sofa whenever they take a rest, watch TV, or whatever they do. While our visual ability is poisoned by TV, sofa has a toxic effect on our body. It is occupied such important place as if it should be, not a need. The softness of sofa is disguised of the ease gives feeling languid. A empty couch and bed designate official object of 'Recess' in modern society where everything is standardized. We have dreamed of momentarily 'Recess' through these things. However, vivid color, slim line and touch, blocked blue pillar represents that his rest does not make him relaxed. He gets way from the hectic life and squats down at balcony, the very private space. In his eyes are fell on somebody squatting down with the outward scenery in the background. Like potted plant next to him, he might have wished for sunshine of the day, watering. There is a new additional symptom to the contemporaries; sunshine deficiency syndrome. He is sitting low to cure 'sunshine deficiency syndrome' like plants which needs light to photosynthesize, as if it has to compensate for his faint face, confined to grayish building. He is going red like plants getting greener because of light. Poor green plant can be said a unstable nature in artificially designed environment. His situation is pretty tough-and-go in this environment. He takes an easy pose and sunbath wearing a undershirts and slippers, squatting down in his independent space. As though it looks so easy, his face turns extremely in red, for a ever lasting sunbath makes him very uncomfortable, that he can not hold out no longer. He is used to dream of the outdoors scene, it does not easy of him any longer. It, therefore, means that recess from reality does not exist any more.

While Park Younggyun is balancing between the ideal and the reality, Seo Eunae leads daringly a new life. Her painting shows two types of the style : the combination of poem, calligraphy, painting of traditional landscape; folk painting. Landscape painting is not only meant to having affinity to nature, desire for returning to nature, but to find the ultimate principle of life, the essence of living with nature. In modern society, where people can not enjoy nature, instead, it has damaged and hurted, filled with grayish buildings; she creates bold landscape and utopia waving her traditional clothes to leave a way to stifling life.

As a narrator, she tells the story in traditional canvas standing at the boarder between the past and the present, the present and the future, the idea and the reality. Her action represent the modern contemporary. She unfolds the story on assumption that if I were somebody "I would~". Adapting a traditional landscape painting and folk painting, she recites a poem, enjoys the elegant entertainment. There is musical entertainment, which doubles the amusement of viewers, in her title.

She is holding a brush with audacious smile in the evening glow. she does not appreciate the scenic beauty, but dare to draw a landscape painting of creative instinct to her own taste. Traditional korean scholar, Seonbi, enjoyed higher level of culture, remote from people, whereas, the artist becomes Seonbi who is singing Trot whose words harmonizes very well in traditional canvas. She plays electric Geomungo, it's sound came from speakers is reverberated through the whole. The lyrics of the Trot song of , are well harmonized in the canvas and read like poetic words that originally has to be there. Even though it is not produced by songs, it is conceivable that it becomes a song only in imagination. Her painting has a same image that of wearing a traditional Hanbok performs a rap. It links the traditional way of entertainment to the modern contemporary sentiment. As there is a saying that, "Traditional entertainment had to have a fun, however, it had an attitude of exploring the mind and the ultimate cause and then finally get an essence of the world.", (Shin Eunkyoung, Korean Traditional Entertainment, BoGo Sa, 2003) she represents her dream that happiness, anger, love, enjoyment of life will be come true through the traditional entertainment in imaginary canvas. Such behaviour- boating on river, appreciation of the scene, playing the korean flute, having a tea time- might be a state of ecstasy, immersed into the surroundings. Without hesitation followed the flow of water, relish the tea, dwell on each music and absorbed in it is the traditional way of entertainment. Finally, she realizes true meaning of life, actualizes it showing herself up in traditional Buddhist painting, .

Visualization of what the real people have dreamed have succeeded in that she becomes a main character to create the world through the traditional canvas. Traditional style, narrator of the painting of I, what the narrator depicts is the world is that the past, present, future, or the reality and the fantasy has been melted in one canvas. As her utopia comes from the real life, her work moves us to sympathize and gives dreamed satisfaction.

Kim Dukki

Hong Insook

Park Youngsun

Lee Youngbin

Park Younggyun

Seo Eunae
